“Fire goes before him
and consumes his foes round about.
His lightning’s illumine the world;
the earth sees and trembles.” Psalm 97:1-7
With all the violence with which we have recently witnessed in the name of God (Radical Islam’s interpretation), what the world needs most right now is authentic Christianity–not the ‘Westboro Baptist’ kind. Fire and brimstone raining down on Sodomites may be revealed truth, but the greater Truth most necessary for right now is God’s Divine Mercy.
But this mercy must not be watered down.
For many a progressive minded person, Divine Mercy is code for an all inclusiveness which allows for continued sin in the face of unchanging truth. For those of this progressive mindset, Catholic moral teaching can be sifted through in a cafeteria-like relativism which relies heavily on the secular dogmas of subjectivism and individualism. This pseudo-Divine Mercy, therefore, neuters Jesus’ salvific sacrifice from the Cross, robbing it of its true saving value, recreating Christ in the image of man (and woman), thereby reversing whom images whom, while stripping Justice from its marriage with Mercy.
But the Truth, in fire and lightning, will set you free!
The Crucified and Risen Christ, the source of Divine Mercy, brings a fire of mercy for those who are riddled with the cancer of sin. This fire is the fire of purgation, sanctification, which means holiness. Those riddled with sin, in the bondage of unholy lifestyles, need not the fire of judgmental Catholics, but the Loving Fire of Jesus Christ. For Christ will set them free by first invading the willing soul with His overwhelming, unconditional Love. For only in Love can a sinner (like you and I) truly differentiate virtue and vice, best illuminated in the embrace of the Good Shepherd.
For a lost sheep will not respond to a shepherd who acts more like a ravenous wolf.
Subsequently, once the fire is lit through the working of the Holy Spirit, revealing the Father of all Mercy, in the Sacrificial Love of the Son, then, and only then, can the lightning (Light) of the gospel, to include morality and commandments, pierce their thinking, their feeling, and their willing.
So, in light of the tragedy in Orlando, fire and brimstone must be kept in check while the fire of Mercy, and the enlightenment of the gospel lightning, takes control of our Catholic evangelization.
