Once upon a time, God dialogued with His stubborn people:
The Pharisees approached him and asked,
“Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?”
They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”
“Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her.”
But Jesus told them,
“Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment.
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate.”
The dialogue continues.
God still speaks to us, especially through His ‘one, holy, catholic, and apostolic’ Church. It may be somewhat understandable when people with no faith, or of an other faith, wrestle with the words of the Pope or the Bishops (or faith filled laity); but when American Catholics, baptized into the ‘faith’ of their ‘fathers,’ wrestle with their own Church, the one faith, and the One Spirit, it is surely a sign of a hardened heart.
But didn’t Jacob wrestle with God, earning the name Israel?
Maybe I should clarify myself. Wrestling ‘with’ God is a holy enterprise whereby in God’s inevitable victory we win! For wrestling with God implies a deep desire to grasp the Truth of God in the deepest essence of His Reality. What American Catholics, of the cafeteria variety, do, however, is fight tooth and nail against God and His Church.
The obvious signs of a hardened heart are the Pro-Choice mentality, a cafeteria relativism, a PC/pop lifestyle, and support for politicians who attack religious freedom. The heart of the American Catholic is sclerotic through support of unconscionable abortions and the tragedy of euthanasia. It is further filled with the plaque of sin through mind boggling participation in the mental gymnastics otherwise known as relativism; brought to near cardiac arrest level through the licentious lifestyle promoted by the pop culture, and in need of divine CPR in their support of anti-religious freedom politicians.
Further compounding this spiritual cardiomyopathy is the heart destroying tactics of fellow Catholics. Gone are the days when non-Catholics were the greatest enemies of the faith. Here are the days of the Trojan horse, emptied of its cafeteria assassins. Liberal cardinals, at the Synod on the Family, aided by the main-stream-media, endorsed by influential cafeteria Catholics in politics, entertainment, and in influential Diocesan positions–and, believe me, I’ve felt the wrath of the liberal diocesan mafia—distort the Pope’s words, push for a bifurcated Catholic agenda, seek for the reform (really a deformity) of Catholic morality (gay marriage, transgenderism, contraception, abortion, etc.), and teach of a Jesus more in line with a progressive social worker, and less of a Crucified (and Risen) Messiah.
Like the Israelites of the past, God’s People, represented by American Catholics of the hardened heart variety, seek to avoid the Cross and its narrow Way in Jesus Christ. They are seeking to find the stairway to heaven without having to actually do the work of climbing it. They are seeking divine grace on purely human terms. Their terms!
And, in a way, everyone is guilty of the very same sin.
After all, we are all infected by the popular American malaise.
But there is a cure.
Repentance, confession, communion, and grace upon grace!
